  • There are two hospitals in Michigan that perform cochlear implant surgeries (Spectrum Hospital and The University of Michigan Hospital).
  • The FDA recommends cochlear implants for children 12 months of age or older.
  • A candidate must wear hearing aids for six months prior to being implanted.
  • The average child gains a year's worth of language in a year's time.
  • Each child must go through an implant candidacy procedure.

The above picture is of the University of Michigan Speech Rehabilitation Service Center. After being implanted with a Cochlear Implant, patients get their implants activated at the center and receive speech and language services.
